1. Preface

@After walking in the Lake District UK on July, my partner, Mr. SSK made a proposal to complete the visit to the 100 Kannon (the Goddess of Mercy) Temples, which were 33 ones in 'SAIGOKU', Kinki District, 33 in 'BANDO', Kanto District and 34 in Chichibu Area. Then he planed the itinerary consulting "The Guide Book for 34 Kannon Temples in 'CHICHIBU'" Area and "Mapple Series' Maps" published by Shobunsha Publications,Inc. He planed to visit the temples in sequence as much as possible with considerable effort. Consequently the route became comings and goings to north and south directions in Chichibu Area. The total walking distance is about 1/10 in comparison with one of a pilgrimage in 'SAIGOKU' or 'BANDO'. Besides the route is in urban areas relatively, then it is not so difficult for us to find lodgings and restaurants. Our plan was about 100Km walking and a six-day trip leisurely from 2nd to 6th November 2,005.
@As the route was made according to the abovementioned traffic road map, we often changed the course in order to take the old pilgrimage paths in Edo Period (1,603 to 1,867) on the old pilgrimage guide maps (published by the 34 Chichibu Temples Confederation) being prepared without a fee at each temple. Then we could walk the old paths beyond our expectations.
@It was almost fine days and a season for the scarlet maple leaves during our walking.
@We finished to visit the 100 Kannon Temples at last. From now on I want to walk the route having some themes.

@
(Note)About The Pilgrimage of 34 Temples in 'CHICHIBU' Area:

@@@@@@@Popularization of the Pilgrimage in 'BANDO' served as a stimulus to the formation of the Pilgrimage in 'CHICHIBU' Area. The oldest temple order list of 'CHICHIBU' Pilgrimage made in 1,448 was kept at Hoshoji Temple, No.32 one. From the first more than half number of temples belonged to 'Sotoh' Sect. ('Sotoh' Sect: 19, 'Rinzai' One: 11, 'Shingon' One: 3: Total 33 temples) Later one temple, which is Shimpukuji Temple, No.2 One belonging to 'Sotoh' Sect, was added. And Total number of temples became 34. At that time the order number of temples were changed simultaneously for convenience of visitors living in Chichibu Area. Since then integration of 'SAIGOKU' , 'BANDO' and 'CHICHIBU' Pilgrimage was emphasized and the 100 Kannon Temples Pilgrimage was formed.

2. Actual Itinerary of "HENRO" trip

@As I set foot on Seibu-Chichibu Station, the imposing spectacle of Mt. Buko (1,295m above the sea level) came in sight in south direction. As lime-stone resources has been exploited on the mountain for long period, there are lots of scratches, bench-cuts. I think that the mountain is pathetic. Every day we walked seeing Mt. Buko in front or behind.
@'The Old Pilgrimage Paths in Edo Period' along the Arakawa River runs from Iwanouedo Temple, No.20 One to Kyushoji Temple, No.25 One. I think that the paths reminds ones of 'SAIGOKU' or 'BANDO'. And also the paths are calm. The roads or paths 'CHICHIBU' Pilgrimage have many old stone signposts kept, new ones made and tags hanged on trees at important positions by Chibu City or the 34 Chichibu Temples Confederation. So we didn't miss our way almost.
@
I had good impressions for the path to The Inner Sanctuary on No.26, Iwaido Temple running through Showadenko KK Chichibu Works and continuing the old steep approach having more than 400 stone steps, one to Hoshoji Temple, No.32 through Tainichi Pass and one to Suisenji Temple through Fudatate Pass.
